Answers:

Why do I have to pay British Columbia's PST on goods I buy outside the province?

The Social Service Tax Act requires all British Columbia residents to pay PST on most goods purchased for use in the province.

Besides the legal reason, it's a matter of fairness. Every British Columbian benefits from PST-funded public services, and the vast majority of British Columbians pay their taxes voluntarily. It's only fair everyone should pay their fair share on taxable goods consumed in British Columbia. When you shop at home, your whole community benefits — from the local retailer to the local hospital.

How do I calculate how much PST to pay on my purchase?

The current PST rate on most goods is seven per cent of the total purchase price. For example, if you purchased an item for $10, the PST is 70 cents. The online form will automatically calculate the amount of PST you have to pay.

Will the government issue a receipt for my PST payment?

Your cancelled cheque, bank draft or money order is your receipt. Please keep a copy of the payment form, with the purchase receipts attached, for your records.

Can I pay online, with a credit card or through telephone banking?

At this time, these payment options are not available. You must pay by cheque, money order or bank draft.

When do I have to pay the PST?

PST is due at the time of purchase or when the goods enter the province (whichever is later).

Do I have to submit my purchase receipt with the payment form? What if I need it as proof of purchase?

Do not submit your purchase receipts with your payment. Please keep a copy of the payment form and attach your purchase receipts to your copy for your records.
